XLam offer considerable expertise in the area of designing, manufacturing and delivering student accomodation projects through Australia and New Zealand. Student accomodation projects are particularly suited to CLT as a construction material due to the smaller rooms and ‘honeycomb design’, shorter spans and replicated floor designs on each level.
In January 2017 work begun on the Otago Polytechnic Student Village, which will have a super structure built entirely of wood. The 231 bed facility will include single dormitory rooms, studios and four bedroom apartments. The build represents the first time CLT has been used in Dunedin, with the complex set to be New Zealand’s largest timber-framed building of its type by height and volume. The use of CLT makes the facility 20% lighter than it would have been if concrete or steel were used and also cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Project Manager, Sam Cadden from Logic Group, said he was proud to be involved with the delivery of the Otago Polytechnic’s vision.
“This innovative construction will set new standards of sustainability within the industry,” he said. Designed by Dunedin architects Mason & Wales, the development features a façade treatment developed in collaboration with prominent Maori artist Simon Kaan. The building is currently in use by students.
